The Mind Body Philosophy

I begin every consultation or seminar with a simple, but telling question: What percentage of success in sport is mental? A majority of even the most elite competitors would agree that success in any competitive environment is nearly 90% mental. And then I ask, how much time is spent training the mental game? Again a majority of competitors will answer less than 10%. Why the drastic imbalance? Why are people not willing to train equally hard to perfect their mental game? In many cases they just do not know how to effectively use Sport Psychology in the performance environment.

In any sport, one player or group of players is trying to outscore, outrun, or outsmart another. In order to succeed in the face of opposition, it is essential to develop a seamless MindBody connection. More often than not it is the athlete, a parent or a coach who becomes the greatest opposition. It is not a physical inability. Negative self-talk, fears of failure, competitive anxiety, lack of consistency in training and preparation, and external pressures or distraction are only a few self-imposed barriers that are all too common amongst elite competitors.

My primary objective is to provide every client techniques and strategies that can be integrated into the performance environment. If you cannot apply it directly in competition, it makes no difference if you can execute the methodologies in my office. I teach skills that are applicable in training and competition and which can be used in the moment with little or no additional resources required. After all, mental performance should become automatic just like following through on a free throw or reading the green before every putt. Like learning any new skill, there is a learning curve; a necessary training period. You cannot learn to shoot the jump shot in a day or become an Olympic caliber sprinter over the course of a week. However, after a short training period and some telling assessments, you will be able to take those tools and create a comprehensive mental game. Coupled with your physical training protocol you will experience the ultimate in peak performance. The results are unbelievable.
